Well... that's what I think of when I want to try something new. Sometimes it's good to get a little squishy between my toes.Sandy #1781http://www.blogger.com/profile/06274743482295696354noreply@blogger.comBlogger49125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303872858613934320.post-66822247456311546032015-02-01T07:42:00.003-07:002015-02-01T07:42:54.881-07:00Our New Place

It's been quite a year getting our act together enough to buy a new home with my Mom. We finally found a great place right before Christmas and are now half way there. 4 bedrooms (2 master suites) and 3 baths. Next comes the sale of Mom's home in Oregon and then our place in AZ. For today, just a couple of pictures.

I found out about this planner today, the Passion Planner (it's on kick start) and the author is not only very creative, but also very generous. She created a planner that I think is perfect for me, so I'm passing on the link to you guys. Check out the kick start video here and then go here to get the details. What I like the most is a chance to print out a weekly view so I can get a feel for it before I decide what I like.
I can see so many ideas here, but the first thing I thought of was all the jig saw puzzles I have done with my Dad over the years. It's been a favorite activity all my life, so much so that I will take any challenge, with any puzzle, any time.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">My layout is simple, and a good reminder of all the fun we had. I cut the green puzzle background with my silhouette and left it on the cutting mat. After I pulled out a few pieces, I removed the outside border piece and ran tape over all the pieces while they were still secure on the mat. Then I just laid the yellow piece on the green and gently pulled it all away from the Silhouette mat. The random pieces are popped up at different levels and the journaling will be on the second page (that I will make when I find the rest of the pictures taken over the years).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Another fun Magazine Inspiration at Magazine Mondays with Paper Crafter's Corner.
This week, the colors popped out at me as something I would never put
together. So of course, I felt a challenge to use them. I remembered a
great CTMH Workshop on the Go kit from last fall and it seems just
right for this challenge. Picking the pictures seemed easy too because
our wedding was poolside and the aqua color seems just right. Add the
fun patterns and it describes our wedding day perfectly. The pictures
are very washed out (my dress and DH's jacket are peach) and I could not
restore them, so the layout adds some color.

same color scheme.

The first thing I saw when I looked at this cover was the word "Declutter". No, I didn't see the part about my workspace. I wonder if this is a subliminal message? Of course, I immediately said, "No Way is Decluttering going to inspire me", even though I know it always does. So my card is all about the injustice of finding the word declutter on this fabulous list. I chose 4 ideas that fit right in with inviting a friend to do something crafty and wrote a lot of the other suggestions around the border. I normally try to use my best penmanship, but this is all about inspiration and I decided to just list the ideas in my normal, sloppy writing. Now, of course, I don't really like it, but my friend won't care.

Christmas Treats for Freckles

The theme for the August Scor-Pal challenge (More than one score) is

"Food For Thought". There are so many ways to create a fun box for a treat, or a basket for a potluck, but I couldn't think of one thing I needed. So I decided to make a little treat box for Freckles for Christmas.

The box is 10" long by 1" in depth, holding a lot of treats. Here are a few of the tricks to remember when creating an odd shape box:

After tracing and cutting out your cardstock, score along the drawn line to ensure your tabs won't tear when you fold them. Believe me, they (the tabs) will be abused by the time you have put all the pieces together. Because my box is rounded, I used the self healing side of my Scor-Mat to work on. It was perfect.

To form the sides of the box, cut strips of matching cardstock the height you want the box to be. You should cut strips for the inside and the outside. Be sure to use a very strong tape (I used Scor-Tape) to secure the strips to the sides. If you want your lid to sit flat against the table, the sides should be 1/16th of an inch wider. If that measurement scares you, just use 1/8th.

If you haven't checked out the challenge fun at the Scor-Pal blog yet, stop by to see what the September challenge will be.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Inspiration for Magazine Mondays at Paper Crafter's Corner, Week 64, was a really cute school bus and I immediately knew what I wanted to do. A simple layout about our bus conversion with before and after photos. After a few hours looking for pictures, I found two that would work ok, but I could not put the colors with any background or get any real ideas on where to go with it. So, I went to my Silhouette and saw the school bus svg I had (from Lettering Delights) and it hit me. An interactive layout with each layer opening in some way to display pictures of the process. But the darn thing wouldn't cut (I admit nothing). SO... a change of directions. Maybe I just wasn't meant to start something new when I still have piles of UFP's (unfinished projects). So I grabbed my Halloween layouts from last October and finished them.

Unfinished Projects

This week's Magazine Monday left me hanging:

The second I saw it, I saw the tears and thought of my UFP's (unfinished projects). They have been haunting me for a while, mostly because they are taking up valuable shelf space. I have a whole hoard of UFP's from cards, to class samples, partially finished altered books, kits and projects that got interrupted, etc. Now, admit it, you have a few too. I don't mind having them because it give's me something to grab and work on if I don't know what else to do (like that will ever happen), but I do want to get some of them done. It might sound silly, but I include my Silhouette and other tools seldom used in my UFP's. To me, if it is not being used because I haven't taken time to learn enough about it, it's a UUFP - Useless Unfinished Project. So my Silhouette is high on the list. That is why last week I played with my shapes and files and learned quite a bit. The result was several cut pieces that needed to be put together.
And that's just what I did. Yesterday was our monthly crop and I took all those cut pieces to put together, and a couple of UFP's to play with for the day. The bone shape treat box is for the Scor-Pal August challenge, so more about that soon. The rest are things I cut on the Silhouette. I love the carousel horse and the doggy wagon. I need to decide if I should add brads for the bolts on the wagon, or maybe something else. I'm thinking some stickles or ? on the tags too. I made several of these so I can add a little fun to my holiday packages. Any suggestions are welcome. I also worked on a mini book I started about 3 years ago with Teresa Collins papers and it is looking great. One more day and I should be done with that too. YEA!
A Very Tiny Water Fall

OK, it's not really a waterfall, but with my limited budget for fuel, I don't think I'll be driving anywhere that actually has water this time of year. I had hoped to grab a shot of a monsoon runoff somewhere, but during the heaviest rains, I realized that I stay in when it's raining. I'm pretty sure the road closures would keep me from getting very far. For those of you not familiar with the summer rains (monsoons) in the Arizona desert, it rains very hard for a short time, causing flash floods in little pockets everywhere. If you are caught out driving during the storm, you might find one or two road closures on your way home. No big deal 'cuz the water runs off as fast as it came and you can be on your way in no time. I had also thought I could add a photo or two of the "waterfall" inside our house when the wind blows the rain hard against our porch room. It runs down the windows mighty fast. But the wind has not been in the right direction, so I am presenting my idea of a very tiny waterfall. My friend has this beautiful fountain in her yard and we took this picture during my visit last week. I enjoyed it's beauty every bit as much as I do massive waterfalls. Be sure to stop by Gallo Organico and read about the photo challenge for this summer and join the fun.

When I saw those colorful umbrellas, I immediately thought of tropical drinks in a tropical paradise, and then I thought of this book I started several years ago. It's all about tropical paradise and I never got past the front and back covers when I took the class from Rusty Pickle right before they closed. So this week, I added my story and pictures and now have a fun coffee table book about one stop on our tropical adventure.
As you can see, I kept it very simple, telling only one story of the many from that visit with Mom and Dad. I pleated this pocket on the last inside page and it is big enough to hold copies of all of Mom's pictures that tell so much more like the construction worker hanging from the 4th story without scaffolding or ladder and a rope tied around his waist. The best part... the rope was made of nylon and tied together in seven different places. I'm guessing they don't have workman's comp telling them how dangerous this is.

It's time for another round of photos for the 2014 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt. I'm making pretty good headway finding many of the items listed. To learn about the challenge and to see the list, go to Gallo Organico: 2014 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt. It's not too late to join the fun. Today I am posting number 3. Birds on a Wire 13. A Sunrise, and 15. A Juggler (sort of).

#13. A Sunrise. This is a sunrise on a stormy day, taken from my back yard. I used to watch the sunrise every day but then we added a small house for my parents, blocking the view. I really enjoyed going out behind their house to watch the sunrise, but my favorite picture is this last one with the reflection off their awning, house, and the roof of a house in the background.

#15. A Juggler. When I first saw this list of photo opportunities, I thought, "Where am I going to find a juggler in the dessert heat in the summer?" Then I realized the answer was simple, I would teach my neighbor to juggle. He loves learning new things. So we spent a few days working on it until he could actually toss and catch all three bags more than once. I snapped a few pictures and realized that I can see what he is doing right in the pictures, so I started taken them in rapid sequence. I was able to show him why he caught or dropped the balls. He's not quite ready for me to say I have a picture of a juggler, but the joy on his face in this one is priceless, so I am posting it.
July's "More Than One Score" challenge is titled 'Colors of Your Country/Patriotic'. That certainly hits the spot for me since I love of all things nautical and red, white and blue are my country colors (USA). I wanted to make a card for DH - Our anniversary is early August, but after going through all my patriotic or nautical red, white, and blue papers, I couldn't bring myself to break any of the sets. I have plans for all of them. Now, before you think I am just making up reasons to shop for more, you need to know that I have years worth of stories to tell living on my sailing boat as a cruiser and I buy matching sets to help me actually get those stories into layouts. Then I saw it. Tucked into one of my albums was a set of papers that has enough duplicates to squeeze a card out of a few sheets. I kept it simple to suit my husbands style.

I scored both sides of the focal piece then cut the points and folded to the center (the reverse side is the red you see). I mounted the card on 6"x6" folded base so I could have a large inside to decorate and write. With that in mind, the front is a tri-fold design that does not open; I glued the wood medallion to both points. That's three scores, but the best part is the new Scor-Pal Self Healing Mat that I won. Not only does it have a grid, but it has lines drawn for 20, 45, and 60 degrees. It was so helpful when cutting my pointed sides. And if you haven't seen these mats yet, they are really nice. It fits snugly with my Scor-Buddy and if I turn it over, I have a nice work mat with a special surface for easy cleaning. Glues, tape, paint, ink, etc. all come off with just a swipe.

I love the colors and had no trouble at all finding pictures that tell the story, along with coordinating papers. The sketch I chose might be from an older "project 12", but I am not sure. I had only labeled it "favorite". Here is the inspiration from PCC:
Keeping my eyes open for any one of the 21 items on the 2014 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt has been quite a challenge. I keep a list in the car and still drive right by one or two every time I go to town. So this week, I mapped out my route just to see what I could find and here are two more...

This is one item I have consciously been watching for, but it has been very hard to find. Our city has a lighting moratorium because of Kitt Peak Observatory, so almost every lamp post you find is commercially installed by the power company, or every house has the same one in the developments. I was so happy when I looked over at this long established restaurant and saw these two unique posts. I tried to frame them better but couldn't see a thing in the bright sunlight, so I'll be returning someday with my SLR.

Each picture is taken a couple of blocks apart and a couple of minutes apart. Once again, I tried framing a good shot but the sun blinded me so I couldn't see the screen. (Now I remember why I bought a manual SLR that doesn't have a screen). The best part of this story is that the second and third pictures are both taken above my head with no idea what I might get. I didn't realize how vibrant the clouds were, or how big of an impact they would have on these shots. Normally, I would have cropped the last picture to offset the 1/2 land, 1/2 sky, but I like the slope of the land and the visual effect of the road, pulling your eye so you feel that you can see for miles.

I hope you have joined the fun. You don't have to be good with the camera to enjoy exploring. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the link at the top of this post, or see my original post here.

Now if someone could just tell me how to put these pictures side by side. I've done it before but I sure cannot remember how.

It's down to the wire, but I finished my entry for Week 57, Magazine Monday over at Paper Crafters Corner. Our inspiration this week is awesome:

And here are my bookmarks:

I chose to make bookmarks because Monday, our monthly craft group, is making bookmarks for our library. That is where we meet and we want to give back. I love red, white, and blue, and stars and stripes. Who wouldn't like having a red, white, and blue bookmark? We hope to create several hundred and I wanted to get some ideas made to see how long they would take and what supplies I will need. I made one more patriotic one that is drying and six others for summer and little boys. (I'll post pictures after we make more Monday). Some have sayings on the back instead of the front. The stars and borders are from my Fiskars punches and and all the bookmarks are two or three layers for durability. So much fun.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The journaling says, "Chacala, Mex - Where 2 spirited minds joined forces". There is a couple of great stories about our time(s) in Chacala where the girl in the picture (only 10 years old at the time) and I pulled a couple of pranks. Our favorite is when we filled the boat head (bathroom) with balloons in honor of her Mom and Dad's anniversary. After all, that's what they found in their apartment when they returned from their honeymoon over 20 years before. The best part of the story is that her parents were watching us from shore the entire time and never asked why we were laying down on the side of the boat (so we could hide while we blew up the balloons and shoved them through the porthole to the head. I have a second page planned to tell the stories with one more picture.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The requirements for this challenge includes using the sketch and also using enamel dots or sequins. I don't have the dots or sequins so I used my Ranger liquid enamel to make my own dots. You can use as many of the items you want BUT you will need to list 5 different items. (example - 2 paperclips, 4 buttons, 1 washi tape, 1 twine, and bling)

The pictures are of our sailboat, Sirius. This is a very dimensional layout using (premade/prepackaged) 1 chain (it really is blue with some green), 1 anchor die cut, 4 glass pebbles, 1 chipboard letter, 3 sets of star stickers, lots of thick blue pexiglass stars that my uncle cut for me, and 3 large brads. The journaling is tucked in behind the blue picture. The sub title, "It's all about the stars" leads into the story of how we used the star, "Sirius" to navigate when we were 70 miles off the coast of Oregon. That's all I'm going to say in order to protect the innocent.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I'm off and running with the Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt. We had the greatest welcome to our city sign that included a bronco with rider. Apparently, work needed to be done underneath (gas, water?, I don't know), so they tore it down. I've been patiently waiting for the construction of our new City Welcome Sign to be complete. The sign is done, but not the landscaping around it so I could not get close but this cropped photo still tells the story.

has a weekly challenge, "Magazine Mondays" and it is always fun to see
what the inspiration is. For week 55, the inspiration photo included a
lot of triangles (see below), and I immediately thought of the quilted cards we did
back in the early 2000's.

I used kids fun foam to "stuff" the quilted pieces, but you can use anything soft and dimensional. If you've never tried this, it's fun and fairly easy. Just start with a piece of foam to 1/2" smaller (width and height) than you want your final card. Cut the foam into unusual shapes with four uneven sides, always putting each piece back in it's place. You should keep your pieces large if this is the first try. Now number your pieces
on one side only. Take a picture or draw a schematic. Believe my, you
will loose track of which piece goes where. Now cover each piece with
paper by wrapping it around the foam, leaving the number visible on the back. Seeing the number on the back is the easiest way to ensure all your pieces are covered right side up. Now put them back in order and mount them to an over-sized piece of cardstock. I prefer to start with a center piece. They will not line up perfectly, but keeping a straight edge will help, so use the paper or a ruler to keep the edge straight as you add pieces. When you are done, cut the cardstock close to the edge and mount the entire piece to your card base. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As
I was completing my card, I found the original instructions I prepared
for my class and I can honestly say, now I know why I suggest never cutting triangles for this quilting technique. Those points can be murder. LOL!

The 2014 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt

This
is it! The day I have waited for. The 2014 Summertime Photography
Scavenger Hunt starts today and what a great list Rinda has created.
What? You don't know what I'm talking about?

Check it out at Gallo Organico!

I found out about this in January and have been waiting patiently since - NOT! Every year, Rinda, of Gallo Organico,
creates a list of 21 items to photograph before the end of summer (or
winter if you are in the Southern Hemisphere). Some will be difficult,
depending on where you live. Like #14 and #15 are a challenge for me.
We don't have summertime parades or juggler performances because of the
heat, so I will need to either travel (not on my budget), get creative,
or use one of the substitutions. Even one of the substitutions is out
this time of year. Hot air balloons do not fly after April or early May
because of the weather. But what does that matter? It's time to think
of another option. Gee, I can juggle. Maybe I'll teach my neighbor
boy.

Please join the fun and be sure to leave me a comment so I can follow your postings too.

I entered in March (see my post Christmas is On It's Way) and won a wonderful prize package that included a Scor-Buddy and cutting mats and two rolls of Scor Tape (my favorite). It really did feel like Christmas!

There is an added theme each month and this month it is to include a stamped image. I created this "wave" card just for fun and, of course, I made it into a nautical card with my sun as the stamped image. It's easier than it looks to cut the wave; the trick is in lining it up when gluing or taping it together. I'm sure in most places, the freedom of working with a glue stick would be most helpful, but it is so dry here, we cannot use glue sticks. I had to try again, learning from the first one. Here is a video tutorial that I found with a link to the template. I dry embossed the background paper using my stylus with an embossing folder, so I could control the cloud placement. I added stickles to my sunshine; even my brightest orange ink did not pop enough.

A few tips: There is a lot of cutting and scoring, so use your most comfortable knife (I prefer the Fiskars finger knife) and a scoring tool (like the Scor-Buddy) to make it easier. Scor the dotted lines before you cut. Scor the top and bottom lines where the tutorial shows a little cut. It's too easy to overcut and ruin your hard work; scoring worked very well. Mount the wave to your card before you decorate, just in case it goes wonky. Use cardstock for the wave; printer paper just doesn't do it. If you go off course while cutting, bring the cut back against the ruler gradually. Most of all, have fun!
